Why Dordon Properties Need Regular Gutter Cleaning

Dordon's coal-mining heritage, exposed A5 corridor position, and mix of housing ages create specific gutter challenges across the village.

Mining-Era Terraces with Ageing Guttering

Dordon grew around the Birch Coppice Colliery, and many of the older terraces along Long Street and New Street date from the early 1900s. These properties often still have original or early-replacement cast-iron guttering with corroded joints, sagging brackets, and sections that have been patched rather than properly repaired over the decades.

A5 Corridor Exposure & Wind-Blown Debris

Dordon sits directly on the A5 Watling Street, which acts as a wind corridor through the village. Properties along the main road and on the higher ground collect wind-blown leaf litter, dust, and grit from the surrounding open farmland. This material compacts in gutters and blocks downpipes faster than in more sheltered areas.

Mature Garden Trees on Established Estates

The 1920s and post-war estates that make up much of Dordon now have mature gardens with trees planted 50–100 years ago. Silver birches, sycamores, and ornamental cherries drop heavy leaf volumes every autumn. Properties that were once clear of overhanging branches now find gutters filling within weeks of the last clean.

Flat-Roof Porches & Extended Properties

Many of Dordon's post-war semis and terraces have been extended over the years — flat-roof porches, rear kitchen extensions, garage conversions. Each modification creates new gutter junctions and concealed drainage runs that are easily overlooked and prone to silent blockages that go unnoticed until damp appears indoors.

Dordon is about 5 miles from our Tamworth base along the A5, and I've been servicing properties in the village for years. It's a proper North Warwickshire mining community — built around the Birch Coppice Colliery — and the housing tells that story.

The older terraces on Long Street and New Street were built for colliery workers and have had a century of modifications. Some still have original iron guttering, others have been patched multiple times. The post-war estates around Dordon Road and Roman Way have their own challenges — flat-roof sections, box gutters, and fifty-year-old garden trees that dump huge volumes of leaves every autumn.

I treat every property in Dordon the same — full SkyVac clean from the ground, every downpipe flushed, GoPro photographs of everything, and a fixed price with no surprises.

How We Clean Your Gutters

Our six-step process is the same for every property in Dordon — from mining terraces on Long Street to modern detached homes on the newer estates.

1. GoPro Before Photos

We photograph every gutter run before we start, so you can see exactly what we found — even if you're not home.

2. SkyVac Vacuum Clean

Industrial SkyVac with carbon-fibre reach poles cleans all gutters from the ground. No ladders, no roof access, no risk of damage to tiles or property.

3. Downpipes Flushed

Every downpipe is flushed through with water to confirm it's draining properly. Blockages are cleared on the spot.

4. Damage Flagged

Cracked joints, sagging brackets, corroded iron guttering — we photograph and report any damage so you can make informed decisions about repairs.

5. GoPro After Photos

Matching after photos of every gutter run — sent to you by email. You'll see exactly what was removed and the clean result.

6. Site Left Clean

All debris is bagged and taken away. Your paths, driveway and garden are left exactly as we found them.

Dordon Housing — What We Clean

Dordon's housing reflects over a century of growth — from early colliery workers' cottages through to modern family estates. We clean them all.

Early 1900s Mining Era

Colliery Terraces: Long Street & New Street

Dordon's original housing was built for workers at Birch Coppice Colliery. These terraced rows along Long Street and New Street feature simple rooflines but guttering that's often been repaired and replaced piecemeal over a century. Many still have cast-iron sections mixed with newer uPVC, creating problem junctions.

1920s–1950s Inter-War & Post-War

Established Semis: Dordon Road, Roman Way, Kitwood Avenue

The village expanded significantly from the 1920s onwards with classic semi-detached estates. These properties now have mature gardens with large trees, flat-roof porches and rear extensions. Original guttering on many is approaching 50–70 years old and showing its age with sagging, leaking joints, and corroded brackets.

1960s–1980s Council & Private

Later Estates: St Leonards Close, Browns Lane, Birchwood Avenue

Post-war council housing and later private developments extended Dordon further. Mix of semis, terraces, bungalows and some detached properties. Standard plastic guttering from this era is now 40–60 years old — often faded, brittle, and prone to cracking during cleaning if handled roughly. Our SkyVac system avoids this risk entirely.

1990s–Present

Modern Estates & Newer Builds

More recent developments around the edges of Dordon feature modern detached and semi-detached homes with uPVC guttering. While the guttering itself is younger, garden trees planted 20–30 years ago are now reaching maturity and beginning to cause blockage issues. Properties near open farmland also collect wind-blown crop debris.

About Dordon

Dordon is a village and civil parish in North Warwickshire, located on the A5 Watling Street approximately 5 miles south-east of Tamworth town centre. Despite being in Warwickshire, it uses a Birmingham (B78) postcode due to its proximity to Tamworth. The village is contiguous with the larger village of Polesworth and had a population of around 3,215 at the last census.

Dordon's history is deeply rooted in coal mining. The village was little more than a row of houses until the opening of Birch Coppice Colliery, which mined coal from the 1850s until its closure in 1987 after a geological fault made further extraction unviable. The colliery employed up to 1,500 workers at its peak and defined the village for over a century. A miners' memorial at the entrance to the site commemorates all those who worked at Birch Coppice, Wood End, and Birchmoor collieries.

Since 1997, the former colliery site has been transformed into Birch Coppice Business Park — now one of the Midlands' largest distribution centres with over 6,500 jobs, home to Ocado, UPS, and Volkswagen among others. The village also has its own character: St Leonard's Church (1868), Dordon Congregational Church on Long Street, two primary schools (Dordon Community and Birchwood), and a volunteer-run library. The hamlet of Freasley, with its Saxon-era common, forms part of the parish.

Why Dordon Gutters Block

The A5 corridor funnels wind across open farmland, depositing crop debris and dust into gutters. Dordon's mature gardens — many planted when the estates were first built 50–100 years ago — now drop heavy leaf volumes. The older mining terraces have ageing guttering with deteriorating joints, while the exposed hilltop position means gutters dry and crack faster than in more sheltered locations.

Best Time to Clean in Dordon

Late November to early December is ideal — after the mature garden trees have shed but before winter weather sets in. Properties surrounded by large trees may benefit from twice-yearly cleaning (spring and late autumn). We offer a Seasonal Plan to keep on top of it automatically.

How We Get to Dordon

Dordon is about 5 miles from our Tamworth base — a straightforward 10-minute drive along the A5 Watling Street. We head south-east past Two Gates and Wilnecote, through the A5/M42 junction 10 interchange, and we're into Dordon. The A5 runs right through the village, giving us direct access to Long Street, New Street, Dordon Road, and every residential street either side of the main road.

We also cover the Freasley area and the streets off Browns Lane and Boulters Lane. Being on the A5 means Dordon is well-connected and easy to reach, so we can often combine Dordon jobs with properties in neighbouring Polesworth, Baddesley Ensor, or Grendon on the same day.
